Building & Scaling an Open-Source Icon System

Context & Motivation
As a product designer, I was constantly frustrated by existing icon libraries: free sets were often visually inconsistent, lacked cohesive grid alignment, or missed essential product UI icons, while quality alternatives were hidden behind expensive paywalls.
Rather than settling for mismatched assets, I took the initiative to build MeisterIcons—a zero-to-one, high-precision open-source icon library designed specifically for modern web applications and design systems.
Working alongside my brother (Rahul Dahal, who owned the entire technical execution), I acted as the Product Owner, System Designer, and Vector Artist. Living together allowed us to move rapidly with daily, desk-side feedback loops—co-designing everything from asset naming structures to developer distribution pipelines.
Craft Precision & Design System Architecture
I standardized the entire visual system on a 24×24px bounding frame using a 1.5px stroke weight:
- •Why 1.5px?
While 2px can feel overly heavy in data-dense SaaS dashboards and 1px looks faint on low-DPI displays, 1.5px strikes the perfect balance of visual weight, legibility, and geometric crispness. We intentionally avoided dynamic stroke adjustments to guarantee visual standardization across complex web apps. - •
Dual Variant Coverage:
Designed both Line and context-aware Solid/Filled variants to provide clear UI state indicators (e.g., active vs. inactive navigation items). - •Library Scale:
Hand-crafted over 2,000+ vector icons, adhering strictly to consistent corner radii, optical balance, and visual padding.
Product Execution & Dev-Designer Alignment
Operating as a tight, two-person team allowed us to optimize the end-to-end handoff and delivery pipeline:
- •
Naming Conventions & Taxonomy:
Co-designed an intuitive semantic naming structure (e.g.,home-line,home-solid,arrow-right-line), ensuring 1:1 parity between Figma asset names and code import strings. - •Figma Plugin First (Frictionless UX):
Instead of forcing designers to navigate bloated component libraries or copy-paste from massive Figma files, I designed a lightweight Figma Plugin UI. Designers could simply open the plugin, search, and drag-and-drop vector icons directly onto their canvas. - •Web Portal & Asset Pipeline:
Designed the official web app interface allowing frontend engineers to search icons, preview visual styles, copy raw SVG strings, or install packages directly via npm
Organic Growth & Community Impact
Without paid marketing, advertising, or a Product Hunt launch, MeisterIcons achieved sustained organic adoption purely through word-of-mouth utility and visual quality:
- •5,000+ Figma Users:
Rapidly adopted by product designers as a daily go-to utility in the Figma Community. - •Multi-Framework Developer Adoption:
Rahul built automated CI/CD pipelines publishing native packages across React (@meistericons/react), Vue, Webfonts, and npm. - •Open-Source Freedom (MIT):
Released under the MIT License to give global creators, early-stage startups, and indie developers complete freedom to use the library in commercial products.
